Career & College Promise Site Tour @
Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) - Harper Campus
Sixty-one Vance High School Academy of Engineering students were engaged in a site tour at Harper Campus at CPCC. Harper specializes in technical training programs that serve the industrial engineering fields including construction, electrical, manufacturing, power generation, and machine and building automation. Training at CPCC Harper Campus is what keeps our country operational so each one of us can enjoy the basic demands in life such as light, food refrigeration, heating, cooling, clean air, and structural stability. |
|
This type of career and technical training is necessary to support the entire process of design, development and maintenance needed to ensure the safety and productivity of our homes, businesses, and transportation systems. This type of education is essential in the health and longevity of our families and society. Due to baby-boomer generations leaving the workforce at an exponential rate, there is an accelerating demand to train and replace these professionals which in turn provides our students with great opportunity to step up and fully meet their economic potential.
Students during this experience were intrigued to learn that high school students who are qualified as juniors and seniors in high school have the opportunity to apply to an associate degree at a CPCC campus like Harper and have 1/2 of their college degree paid for through
Career & College Promise. Each campus at CPCC has different areas of technological training essential to our workforce and economy. We encourage for all students to seek out the careers that are supported and that interest them before they choose to invest into a specific college and career plan.
Students and parents are also recommended to research exactly which specific associates degrees are transferable to bachelor degree programs in North Carolina in case the student chooses to pursue additional higher education before entering the workforce after completion of their associates degree.
Thank you to CPCC for hosting. This news post is to help inform the larger community of students and educational partners who were not able to attend during these past two days. Thank you for our students, families, and partners especially MeckEd for your continued support. Check back to access documents shared with us on the trip (click here- 1 , 2, 3, 4).
For further inquiry please contact your career development coordinator.

National Hot Rod Association STEM Day @ zMax Drag Race Strip
Charlotte, NC

9.18.15
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Academies of Engineering including Vance Academy of Engineering freshmen attended the National Hot Rod Association STEM Day @ ZMax Drag Race Strip in Charlotte, NC on Friday, September, 18th 2015. Thank you to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Career and Technical Education, MeckED, and the U.S. ARMY for supporting S.TE.M. - science, technology, engineering, and mathematics career driven students on this experience. Anytime leaders in our community open doors of opportunity, Career & Technical Education Academies strive to engage students with the larger business community in experiential connections that enlighten the general concepts taught in education. Students are challenged to make connections by exploring the technical systems that relate to events that relate to STEM. At zMax Dragway, students from all walks of life were challenged to identify how STEM concepts as well as precision, innovation, and safety all play a roll into the race sport industry. Students began to uncover the deep connections and relationships between businesses in manufacturing, energy and power and how they all work together to support each other. Furthermore, educators were given an opportunity to focus on the most important part of business, and that is the establishment and development of RELATIONSHIPS that are built between the public and private sectors. These relationships thrive when students and professionals interact in and outside the four walls of education. Next year, students requested to picnic on the grounds before the race. What a great idea. This is how legacy is built. High School Library?

Inspirational Maker Space?
08.10.15 - 08.13.15
Have high school libraries evolved to meet the needs of today's and tomorrow's youth? Are traditional public school libraries a passive learning experience ready for a “learn by doing” attitude? How can we all work together to create space that is inspirational, engaging and productive for our students ? Albert Einstein once said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” Let’s see what senior design interns from Zebulon B. Vance High School Academy of Engineering have to say about high school library re-design… Thank You to Labella Associates, PC and Architect Roger Leeson for the opportunity to work and learn during an engaging 34 hour internship on high school library innovation design. |

CAD to CAM to PROTOTYPE @ VAOEThroughout this STEM Education project, students apply skills and knowledge related to the engineering design process, CAD modeling, CAM, CNC code generation, three dimensional printing and CNC milling. Students design and prototype a personalized product innovation using constraints provided by the Introduction to Engineering & Computer Integrated Manufacturing instructional team. Thank you to every private industry partner who has helped support Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Career & Technical Education's Vance Academy of Engineering on improving the design and manufacturing capabilities at Zebulon B. Vance High School. It is long-lasting, sustainable partnerships such as National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, AT&T, Livingston & Haven, Electrolux, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools instructional leadership that help provide excellent educational opportunities for our students. The slideshow images to the left are snapshots from ongoing developments related to various work relative to design and manufacturing innovation at VAOE. Private-Public partnerships like these help continue to excite and innovate public education. Get Your Work-Based Learning with ACEArchitecture Construction Engineering (ACE) Mentors are the partners you want your student to be working with when it comes to career fields associated with architecture, construction, and engineering.
According to ACE’s $1,000 scholarship 2015 award winner and Vance Academy of Engineering student Ramon Morales, “The best concept overall was that every team developed their own project with the purpose of improving the City of Charlotte. This school year there were six teams including Myers Park, Hopewell, West Charlotte, Audrey Kell, East Meck, and Uptown. Every team worked hard making the spring 2015 banquet presentation a great success. My team, (Uptown) created a greenway bridge known as THE QUEEN’S THREAD. This bridge was made for pedestrians to roam freely around the center city of Charlotte while incorporating bleachers that overlooked an outdoor amphitheatre. Like every team, we learned how to manage our time wisely and get the job done. Near the end of the year we came together at the UNC Charlotte Center City building to present and compete for first place. ACE Mentoring is a great place for students to acquire work-based learning experience while preparing students for the real world.” The following teams were responsible for the following projects; Hopewell HEALS ON WHEELS, Audrey Kell QUEEN CITY QUARTER, Myers Park CUSTDOME, East Meck BEACONOF HEALTH, and Uptown THE QUEEN’S THREAD. Congratulations to everyone !!! |

Vance Engineering Schooled on Workforce Training Daetwyler Industries in Huntersville, NC is setting the standard for public-private education partnerships. It is businesses like Daetwyler who open their doors to help students and educators understand what skills sets are needed in today's manufacturing workforce. The next steps include application, interviews, and aptitude assessments. Daetwyler employees commented, "without a doubt Vance Engineering students were the best bunch we have seen for a job shadow. We felt like they asked very pertinent questions. They listened and participated far more than any group we had". Thank you to Daetwyler, Career and Technical Education & Meck ED for all your support.
